What is Tesouro Direto?

Basically, when you buy a government bond, you are lending your money to the government.

The process works as follows.

The government issues a fixed income security that is added to the Tesouro Direto platform.

The investor will create an account on the website to have access to the available assets.

After creating an account, the investor will transfer the capital needed to invest. This way, the investor can choose the security that best suits their profile and goals.

Finally, the investor defines the value and makes the investment.

Tesouro Direto works with three types of bonds:

• Prefixed Treasury

• Treasury Selic

• IPCA Treasury

It is important to mention that the process is done entirely online. In other words, you do not need to leave your home at any time to acquire the assets!

What is Tesouro Selic?

The Tesouro Selic is a type of investment that belongs to the universe of public bonds, as it is issued by the government.

It has this name because its remuneration is linked to the Selic, which is Brazil's basic interest rate. In this way, it follows the variation of the Selic.

This means that we are talking about an investment with a fixed profitability.

As it offers great security and daily liquidity, this investment is recommended for those who want to set up a emergency reserve or set short-term goals.

How does the Selic Treasury work?

As it is a fixed income application, the investment follows the same dynamics as financial products in this category.

To help you better understand Tesouro Direto and Tesouro Selic, we will give a very practical example.

Imagine that you are thinking about taking out a loan from the bank. In this case, everyone knows that the financial institution will charge an interest rate, right?

The idea of investing in Tesouro Direto is basically the same. However, now you are the person providing the capital needed for the operation. Therefore, you will also receive a remuneration, which is the interest!

What is the yield on Tesouro Direto?

The annual profitability corresponds to 100% of the Selic rate for the period.

Therefore, the monthly income is equivalent to dividing it by the months of the year.

Consider the base rate at 10.75% per year. Divide it by 12 and the gross return will be 0.89% per month.

How much does R$ 500 yield in the Selic Treasury?

If you want to get out of savings, the Tesouro Selic is a great option!

After all, through this investment, you can obtain a more advantageous return, but without giving up security, something fundamental for those who invest in fixed income!

And to make calculating profitability simpler, let's give an example.

Imagine that you have R$ 500 to invest in Tesouro Selic. What would be the profitability of the investment?

Currently, the Selic rate is 10.75% per year.

As an example for the simulation, we will use the title “Selic Treasury 2025”.

Its profitability is SELIC + 0.0655% and the maturity date is 03/01/25.

As the initial amount invested was R$ 500, on the final maturity date, you will have R$ 623.90 in total (IR discount already applied).

It is important to remember that you can withdraw the invested amount whenever you want. However, to obtain the mentioned return, you must wait until the final date arrives.

Furthermore, despite the annual visibility, remember that the Tesouro Selic offers daily remuneration.

How much does R$ 1000 yield in Tesouro Selic?

To make it easier to understand, we will use the same example from the previous topic, but with a different value.

Well, how much would you have on the final maturity date if you invested the amount of R$ 1000 in the Tesouro Selic 2025?

The gross amount would be R$ 1,291.53. But because of Income Tax (the discounted amount would be R$ 43.73), you would receive a little less.

In this case, when redeeming the amount on 03/01/2025, the total amount you will receive will be R$ 1247.80.

What are the other types of Treasury Direct bonds?

As we said at the beginning of the article, there are three types of Treasury Direct bonds.

In addition to the Tesouro Selic, there is the IPCA and the prefixed. Learn more about these options:

IPCA Treasury

The IPCA Treasury is an investment product whose profitability is linked to inflation.

Its index is the IPCA — Broad National Consumer Price Index.

As it is linked to inflation, when you buy this bond, you will not know exactly how much you will receive on the maturity date (but you can run a simulation on the Tesouro Direto website).

In other words, it is possible to have an estimate, as long as, of course, you do not withdraw the money before the due date.

Prefixed Treasury

The fixed-rate Treasury Direct is a Fixed Income security with interest rates determined at the time of contracting.

This means that when you lend your money to the government, you will know exactly how much you will receive at the end of the term of the bond.
